School Improvement Designations

Overview

Purpose

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, states must identify schools that meet certain criteria that classify them as schools in need of improvement. The South Carolina Department of Education has developed a South Carolina School Improvement Designation document explaining the criteria, identifications, and support these schools receive.

Comprehensive Support & Improvement (CSI Schools)

CSI schools are defined as Title I schools performing at or below the 5th percentile of all Title I schools in the state. CSI schools are identified every three years, in alignment with the state’s interim targets cycles. Each school will receive technical assistance funds and be assigned a state level transformation coach.

FY23 CSI Schools:  Charleston Advancement Academy, Felton Laboratory Charter School, Lowcountry Acceleration Academy, SC Whitmore School

Targeted Support & Improvement (TSI Schools)

TSI schools are defined as any school with one or more subgroup of students performing at or below the 5th percentile of the highest performing Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school in the state. ATSI schools with low-performing subgroups are identified every three years, in alignment with the state’s interim targets cycles.  Each school will receive federal school improvement funds and receive technical assistance and support via professional development from relevant department of education offices.

FY23 ATSI Schools:  Bridges Preparatory School, GREEN Charter School Spartanburg, High Point Academy, Lakes and Bridges Charter School, Palmetto Achievement Center for Excellence Academy (PACE), Riverwalk Academy, Spartanburg Preparatory School

Priority Schools

Priority Schools are defined as schools performing at or below the 10th percentile among all schools in the state. Priority Schools are identified every three years, in alignment with the state’s interim targets cycles. Each school will receive state technical assistance funds and access to the South Carolina School Improvement Framework, Evidence-Based Intervention Guide, and professional learning opportunities.

FY23 Priority Schools:  Felton Laboratory Charter School, GREEN Charter School of the Midlands, Lakes and Bridges Charter School, Lowcountry Montessori School, Palmetto Achievement Center for Excellence Academy (PACE), Polaris Tech, Riverwalk Academy
